What sort of equipment does a midwife carry?
The following is a guide to the equipment carried by homebirth midwives.
Antenatal Care
- Fetoscope
- Fetal Doppler with gel
- Pregnancy wheel
- Measuring Tape
- Thermometer
- Stethoscope
- Sphygmomanometer (blood pressure gauge) with appropriate sized cuff
- Urine testing equipment
- Education materials, resources, books, information sheets and models
- Tissues
- Gloves - sterile and clean / non-sterile
- Other disposable items as required eg. blueys/underpads etc
- Records and other materials for health record keeping including ACMI Guidelines for Consultation & Referral
Intrapartum Care
- All antenatal equipment as listed above PLUS
- Disposable birth equipment and paper-based products eg, blueys/underpads, gauze squares, gloves, dressings, tape, dressing packs etc
- Comforting equipment during labour (some midwives) eg. massage oil, aromatherapy oil
- Homeopathics and/or herbal medicines (some midwives)
- Instruments eg. clamps, scissors
- Suction Equipment
- Urinary catheterisation equipment
- Lubricant
- IV equipment and fluids
- Oxygen delivery and resuscitation equipment eg. bag and mask, various tubing and attachments
- Emergency drugs eg Syntocinon, Syntometrine
- Cord clamps
- Pathology equipment, cord blood tubes, syringes, needles etc
- Sharps container
- Amnihook and possibly other medical items
- Torch
- Patience and Love for observation, support, encouragement, assessment of normal
Postnatal Care (includes immediately postpartum)
- All equipment as listed above PLUS
- Suturing Equipment including anaesthetic, instruments, needles, syringes, swabs
- Baby Scales
- Documentation requirements and equipment - birth registration papers, child health record books, medicare and centrelink papers, perinatal data forms, healthy hearing information, referral documentation
- Education materials, breastfeeding resources, community support information
- NNST equipment and cards
